What is ChatGPT agent?
ChatGPT agent is a mode in ChatGPT that can complete multistep tasks for you using its own virtual computer. It combines web browsing, deep research and tools such as a terminal and file creation in one agent. OpenAI launched it in July 2025 for paid ChatGPT users.
ChatGPT agent brings together two earlier OpenAI efforts: Operator, which could click through websites, and deep research, which could read and synthesize many sources. With agent mode on, ChatGPT can plan a task and move between these abilities as needed.
The agent works inside a virtual computer. It can browse visually like a person, read pages with a text browser, run code in a terminal and create files such as spreadsheets and slide decks. With connectors, it can also use information from apps you link, such as email or calendars.
You stay in control. The agent narrates what it is doing, you can interrupt or redirect it, and it asks for permission before consequential actions, such as making a purchase or sending something on your behalf. You can also take over the browser yourself, for example to log in.
OpenAI launched ChatGPT agent on July 17, 2025 for Pro, Plus and team plans, then expanded it to Enterprise and Edu. The standalone Operator product was retired after its features moved into ChatGPT agent.
